Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar is a pretty village of 600 inhabitants on the west-coast of Mallorca. Driving the north-to-south coastal serpentine road in this part of the island you cannot miss Banyalbufar's terrace-beauty. The village is literally divided by the immensely attractive road into lower Banyalbufar and into upper-Banyalbufar with its church, the picturesque little houses and its stairs. Speaking of stairs: there are loads of those. Banyalbufar must be stair-lovers heaven. The nirvana of every true stair-enthusiast and stair-junky. Lord, this is where George Lucas could do Stair-Wars. Anyway, I think you get the idea.

When adventure is on your mind just climb a couple of hundred of these steps and you will either end up within one of Mallorca's most beautiful nature reserves in the mountains or (cured of any more Stair Treks) in your hotel room nursing your blisters. For the wanderers there is a lot to discover around Banyalbufar, such as the former smuggler trail you can follow from Banyalbufar to Port d'es Canonge and one of the coasts 82 watchtowers is well worth visiting, too (approx. 3 km south of the village).

The coastal road is a curse and a blessing at the same time: it is great to cruise along and Banyalbufar's sole connection to the other parts of the island. On the other hand it is (for this obvious reason) highly frequented and truck-traffic and suicidal motorbike-drivers are not only a serious threat for all pedestrians (walkways are rare) but also a constant source of noise in an otherwise pleasantly quiet environment.

Banyalbufar takes an honest pride in its town-beach, which is (for everyone from Birmingham for example, or Oklahoma) truly impressive: It indeed has a connection to the sea and some decent 30 square meters of soil to rest your head. Not exactly a shiny-white-sand kind of soil but (mostly) sturdy and (definitely) unique. There is even a waterfall thundering from above (sadly diminishing the 30 square meters, but for the effect that's only fair, I guess). What makes this beach even more desirable is the time you need to reach it: instead of stairs only it is also a steep ramp, going down some hundred meters from the centre of Banyalbufar to sea-level. If you are in the stage of mind to do this by foot the beach might gain in appeal with every further step you take downwards. Make sure you follow exactly the one and only sign pointing to the beach otherwise (after walking down for several hundred meters) you might (to first your surprise and then to your dismay) end up in dead end and be walking back in a bad mood.

About 4 hotels / hostels / B&B take care of the accommodation (Hostal Baronia the most famous among those) and about 2 restaurants and 2 snack-bars offer their services for the hungry. There is a pharmacy and liquor-store (small!), two shops where you can buy anything from ice-cream, noodles, baked beans to souvenirs. Expect the local post-office to be open between 10:00 am and 11:00 am.

You will not get lost in Banyalbufar, that’s for sure.
